On July 17, 2012, China Center for International Economic Exchanges and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will co-host the U.S. - China Investment Cooperation Forum at Beijing International Hotel. More than 300 Chinese and American officials, well-known entrepreneurs and scholars will participate in the forum. A number of issues will be discussed thoroughly at the forum, such as the opportunities and challenges facing the U.S. - China investment, America's foreign investment review system, company law and regulation, corporate governance and responsibility. The experts and scholars will make practical proposals to help Chinese firms to invest in the U.S.

Robert Kimmitt

Kimmitt_photoMr.Kimmitt is Independent Chairman of the Deloitte Center for Cross-Border Investment.  He is also Senior International Counsel at the law firm of WilmerHale. 

 

Prior to returning to the private sector, Mr. Kimmitt served from 2005-2009 as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.  He was American Ambassador to Germany from 1991-1993, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 1989-1991, and General Counsel to the U.S. Treasury from 1985-1987.  He served at the White House as National Security Council Executive Secretary and General Counsel from 1983-1985, with the rank of Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. From 1976-1983, Mr. Kimmitt was a member of the NSC Staff.

 

Before rejoining the government in 2005, Mr. Kimmitt served from 2001 to 2005 as Executive Vice President, Global Public Policy, of Time Warner Inc. Earlier, Mr. Kimmitt was Vice Chairman and President of Commerce One, a software company headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area. From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Kimmitt was a partner at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, and from 1993 to 1997 he was a managing director of Lehman Brothers. From 1987 to 1989, Mr. Kimmitt was a partner in the law firm of Sidley & Austin.

 

From April 1970 to August 1971, Mr. Kimmitt served in combat with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam. He retired in November 2004 as a Major General in the Army Reserve. During 1997 Mr. Kimmitt was a member of the National Defense Panel, and from 1998 to 2005 he was a member of the Director of Central Intelligence’s National Security Advisory Panel. He also served as a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.

 

Mr. Kimmitt was graduated with distinction from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (B.S., 1969). He received a law degree from Georgetown University (J.D., 1977), where he was editor in chief of Law & Policy in International Business. From 1977 to 1978, he served as law clerk to Judge Edward A. Tamm of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.  In May 2009, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Marymount University.

 

Mr. Kimmitt is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Diplomacy, and his foreign language is German. He is the author of many articles, including “Public Footprints in Private Markets,” a seminal look at Sovereign Wealth Funds that was published in Foreign Affairs magazine.
